The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Naomi Silekunola, ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, and seven others following a stampede that claimed 35 lives at a carnival in Ibadan.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, during a funfair organized by Wings Foundation, an NGO supporting women and girls. The event, which targeted 5,000 attendees, was promoted with fliers featuring Silekunola.

Police spokesperson Osifeso Adewale confirmed the arrests, including the event sponsor, Silekunola (31), and Fasasi Abdulahi (56), the school principal. Six critically injured persons are receiving medical attention.

The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, for further investigation. Residents are urged to remain calm as police intensify patrols in the area.

The command expressed condolences to affected families, pledging that justice will be served.
