Vice President Kashim Shettima has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State following the tragic loss of about 10 civilians during a military airstrike targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Silame Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on December 25, 2024, during an operation aimed at dismantling a Lakurawa logistics base. Unfortunately, the airstrike inadvertently resulted in civilian casualties in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, leaving several others injured.

Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, explained that the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence and extensive aerial surveillance. He assured the public that a thorough investigation into the reported civilian deaths would be conducted.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima described the incident as a rare but painful consequence of the ongoing war against terrorism.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate event. May Almighty God grant them strength and courage in this difficult time,” Shettima stated.
He also extended an apology on behalf of the military, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces in their mission to secure the nation.
“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologise for this devastating loss. I encourage all Nigerians to keep supporting our brave military personnel as they work tirelessly to ensure a safer and more secure country for us all,” he added.
In a separate engagement, Vice President Shettima led a delegation to Jigawa State to condole with Governor Umar Namadi over the loss of his mother, Hajiya Mariam Namadi, and his eldest son, Abdulwahab Namadi, who both passed away within 24 hours.
