A shark attack at Egypt’s popular Marsa Alam resort has left one tourist dead and another injured, according to a statement released by the Environment Ministry on Sunday.
The nationalities of the victims were not disclosed.
The incident occurred in deep waters outside the designated swimming area near the northern jetties of Marsa Alam, where swimming is strictly prohibited.
In response, authorities have announced the closure of the jetties for two days starting Monday as a precautionary measure.
Marsa Alam, renowned for its coral reefs, vibrant marine life, and pristine beaches, attracts tourists from around the world. However, shark attacks in the Red Sea remain rare.
The last fatal shark encounter occurred in June 2023, when a Russian national was killed by a tiger shark in Hurghada, another resort city north of Marsa Alam.
This tragedy follows a recent incident last month in the same region, where a tourist boat capsized, resulting in four fatalities and seven people still missing.
