A crackdown on drunk driving in Mpumalanga, South Africa, has resulted in the arrest of over 500 individuals since December 1. The province’s Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison reported that traffic law enforcement officers and police conducted various operations to curb dangerous behavior on the roads.
MEC Jackie Macie praised the efforts of law enforcement, stating that their work has contributed significantly to reducing fatal accidents by holding offenders accountable. Macie emphasized the importance of punishing drunk drivers, saying, “Drinking alcohol before taking to the road has left many families and communities distraught as they had to deal with deadly consequences of subsequent road crashes.”
The department spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, revealed that traffic officers have inspected approximately 105,000 vehicles since the start of the festive season. Over 35,000 vehicles, especially heavy motor vehicles, went through various weighbridges across the province, resulting in 18,235 summonses issued to motorists for various offenses, mostly moving traffic violations.
As New Year celebrations approach, Macie urged the public to act responsibly, including refraining from drinking in public spaces or obstructing roads. He also encouraged organizers of New Year’s Eve events to collaborate closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of attendees and maintain order.
