Zimbabwe’s President Transfers Power to Vice-Presidents Amid Month-Long Leave

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has embarked on a month-long annual leave, transferring power to his two vice-presidents, Kembo Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga. According to the state-run Herald newspaper, the president will remain in the country during his vacation, which began on Tuesday, is expected to resume office in February.

During his leave, President Mnangagwa will be reachable for matters requiring his direct involvement, both as state president and chairman of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), as stated by cabinet secretary George Charamba.

Vice-Presidents Mohadi and Chiwenga will serve in rotation, with Mohadi taking charge from December 31, 2024, to January 19, 2025, followed by Chiwenga overseeing until the president resumes duty.

Since assuming office in 2017, President Mnangagwa has focused on reestablishing connections with Western nations, addressing Zimbabwe’s significant foreign debt, and revitalizing the country’s economy.
