Mali’s former Prime Minister, Choguel Maiga faces allegations of embezzlement following a report from the country’s public spending oversight authority.

The report details several instances of misappropriation involving substantial amounts of money during Maiga’s tenure. It alleges that the former leader either concealed these activities or directly benefited from them.
Among the irregularities cited by the auditor is “undue expenditure on staff” between 2020 and 2023. This includes nearly €20,000 spent on phone subscriptions and the misuse of equipment, such as WiFi and computers, originally designated for schools.

Maiga served as Prime Minister from June 2021 until November 2024, when junta leader Colonel Assimi Goïta dismissed him. The dismissal followed Maiga’s public criticism of the junta’s lack of transparency regarding a promised transition to democratic governance.
While Maiga has yet to address the latest allegations, he previously commented on the auditor’s investigation, stating that he had a “clear conscience.”
