The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has refuted claims circulating in a viral video accusing the agency of demolishing a building located at 1A Olubunmi Owa Street, Off Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa.
In a statement released on Friday by the Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Adu Adegoke, LASBCA’s General Manager, Mr. Gbolahan Oki, clarified that the removal of an illegal attachment to the property was carried out by the property owner and not by the agency.
Mr. Oki explained that the attachment violated building regulations and was removed without proper authorization or permits. He described the viral video as “misleading and an attempt to tarnish the agency’s reputation.”
He further stated, “The Lagos State Building Control Agency became aware of a misleading video regarding the removal of an illegal attachment by the owner. In line with our commitment to urban regeneration and sustainable development, LASBCA instructed the owner to remove the attachment after serving multiple notices.”
According to the General Manager, these notices included warning letters, seal-off directives, and quit orders, all of which were duly served.
LASBCA officials reportedly discovered the unauthorized demolition during a routine enforcement inspection. The team faced resistance from some occupants who had failed to comply with the established building regulations.
Mr. Oki also debunked claims made in the video, noting that the individual obstructing LASBCA officials had previously admitted to receiving notices, contradicting the narrative portrayed in the viral footage.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding building standards and ensuring a safe and sustainable urban environment across Lagos State.
