President Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja on January 6, 2025, for Accra, Ghana, to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Mahama on January 7.
In a statement released on Sunday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga confirmed the visit, noting that Tinubu’s attendance follows an invitation from Mahama, who previously visited the Nigerian leader in December.
John Mahama, Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, was reelected in December 2024 and will succeed outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served from 2017 to 2025.
Onanuga highlighted the strong personal relationship between Tinubu and Mahama, as well as the longstanding diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other African leaders at the inauguration ceremony. He will be accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior government officials.
