A devastating plane crash near Malindi Airport in coastal Kenya on Friday claimed three lives and caused significant destruction, local authorities have confirmed.

The light aircraft crash-landed in Kwachocha, a bustling area along the Malindi-Mombasa highway, mere meters from the airport. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the plane struck bystanders before bursting into flames upon impact.

Salim Mwayaya, a witness to the incident, shared his account:“We were on our way to Malindi when we saw the plane crash. The wing hit a woman on a bike, severing her head. The plane then caught fire, and the pilots jumped out. They were taken to the hospital alive. That is all I saw.”

Authorities identified the victims as a motorcycle taxi rider who was burned to death and two other individuals struck by debris from the disintegrating aircraft.

The tragic crash has reignited debates about safety measures near Malindi Airport. Rashid Odhiambo, a Member of the County Assembly, called for immediate action: “This plane was not a commercial aircraft, so we can attribute the incident to an unfortunate accident. However, safety precautions must be enforced, especially on this road next to the airport.”

The Kwachocha neighborhood, where the crash occurred, has been embroiled in a legal dispute over plans to expand Malindi Airport. Residents have opposed the government’s proposed extension, citing unresolved issues with land compensation.

The crash highlights the urgency of addressing safety concerns in the area, both for residents and travelers using the airport.
