Maria Sarungi Tsehai, a prominent Tanzanian activist, was abducted by armed men in Nairobi, Kenya, but has been released after several hours.
According to Amnesty International Kenya, Tsehai was “forced” into a vehicle on Sunday afternoon, but was later freed.
Tsehai, a vocal critic of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, shared a video on X, appearing shaken but relieved, saying “I have been saved.”
The Law Society of Kenya president, Faith Odhiambo, claimed responsibility for arranging her release, warning that Kenya won’t be used as a haven for targeting individuals.
Tsehai’s abduction has sparked concerns about Tanzania’s human rights record, particularly with the 2025 presidential elections approaching.
As a fierce advocate for land rights and freedom of expression, Tsehai has been a thorn in the side of the Tanzanian government, which has been accused of returning to repressive tactics.
