Former Liverpool and West Ham defender Rigobert Song has been named the new head coach of the Central African Republic (CAR) national team.
The 48-year-old Cameroonian football legend replaces Raoul Savoy, who was sacked in October after CAR’s unsuccessful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Song brings a wealth of experience to the role, having played 137 games for Cameroon during his 17-year international career.
He also previously managed Cameroon for two years, leading the team at the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Song’s new challenge will be to guide CAR, nicknamed the Wild Beasts, to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations finals appearance.
His immediate focus, however, will be on the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, which resumes in March with home games against Madagascar and Mali.
CAR currently sits in fifth place in Group I with four points from four matches.
