Rwanda’s oil and gas exploration efforts in Lake Kivu have yielded promising results, indicating a significant potential for hydrocarbon resources in the area.
According to the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board (RMB), a 2D seismic survey conducted between 2021 and 2022 identified favorable conditions for oil and gas occurrences in the Lake Kivu basin.
The study revealed a deep thickness of around 3.5 km, suggesting a high potential for hydrocarbon discoveries.
Additionally, 13 structural pockets and potential drilling locations were mapped, paving the way for further exploration and potential development.
RMB is now seeking to attract industry players to advance exploration and move towards the development and production of oil and gas resources in the Lake Kivu basin.
The discovery has the potential to transform Rwanda’s energy landscape and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
