The Spanish Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a Spanish national has been kidnapped in North Africa, though details surrounding the incident remain unclear.
“Several reliable sources confirmed a Spanish citizen is currently held against his will in Northern Africa,” a spokesperson for the ministry stated on Friday. “The government is working actively to clarify all the aspects and solve the issue.”
While the Foreign Ministry has not disclosed specifics, Reports say that the victim was allegedly abducted in southern Algeria by an Insurgents group and taken to Mali.
The region in question has long been a hotspot of tension, particularly in Western Sahara. Formerly a Spanish territory until 1975, Western Sahara is currently contested between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which advocates for its independence.
Spanish authorities have assured the public of their commitment to resolving the situation and ensuring the safety of the kidnapped individual.
