A devastating public transport bus accident occurred on the morning of January 23, 2025, in Kurba town, Dawunt district, North Wollo zone of Ethiopia’s Amhara region. According to the North Wollo Zone Communication Office, the accident claimed 25 lives and left dozens injured.
Deputy Inspector Getachew Arage of the Dawunt District Police Office stated that the bus, with license plate code 3-32917, departed from Kurba Town at 6:00 AM, heading for Dessie. The crash occurred approximately 9 kilometers from Kurba Town in Segora 04 Kebele.
“Twenty-five people were killed, 14 sustained severe injuries, and 15 others suffered minor injuries,” Arage reported. The injured passengers have been transported to Delanta and Dessie Hospitals for medical care.
In a separate incident later that afternoon, a fatal crash in North Shewa Zone’s Mojana Wadera District, Zubanba Kebele, claimed two lives. Local reports indicate one person sustained critical injuries while another suffered minor injuries. The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at Debre Birhan Referral Hospital.
These tragedies follow a catastrophic accident in the Sidama Region less than a month ago. On December 29, 2024, a truck overloaded with passengers veered off a bridge and plunged into the Gelana River in the Bona Zuria district, killing 71 people, most of whom were family members traveling to a wedding. Among the victims were the groom and several youths aged 15 to 30.
The recent spate of deadly road accidents has raised concerns over transportation safety across Ethiopia, prompting calls for urgent measures to prevent further loss of life.
