A devastating crash in Ogunjini, KwaZulu-Natal, north of Durban, claimed the lives of four people and left multiple others injured when a bakkie transporting funeral mourners lost control and rolled down an embankment.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the accident occurred on Sunday morning when the vehicle, carrying approximately 15 passengers, struck a roadside barrier before overturning. Four people were declared dead at the scene, while others sustained moderate to severe injuries.
By the time emergency responders arrived, many of the injured had already been rushed to various hospitals by civilians. Paramedics provided on-site medical assistance before transporting the remaining casualties to healthcare facilities.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting that overloading and loss of control may have contributed to the tragedy. This incident underscores growing concerns over road safety and transportation risks, particularly in rural areas where bakkies are frequently used for passenger transport.
