Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected as the new chair of the African Union (AU) Commission.
The decision was made by African leaders at a summit on Saturday, amid growing concerns over the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Djibouti’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Ilyas Dawaleh, confirmed Youssouf’s victory in a post on the social media platform X. Youssouf, who has served as Djibouti’s foreign minister since 2005, has played a key role in the country’s diplomatic affairs, previously serving as ambassador to Egypt and working under three different presidents.
His leadership at the AU Commission comes at a critical time, with tensions rising in Central Africa. The election signals confidence in his experience and diplomatic skills to navigate the region’s pressing challenges.
