Former Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has been arrested on allegations of money laundering, the state-run Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) confirmed early Sunday.
FCC spokesperson Ibrahim Rossaye stated that Jugnauth is currently in custody at Moka detention center in the central region of Mauritius. Authorities launched multiple searches, including at the former leader’s residence, uncovering and seizing 114 million Mauritius Rupees ($2.4 million) in cash.
Jugnauth’s legal representative, Raouf Gulbul, confirmed that his client has been provisionally charged but denied any wrongdoing. The arrest comes amid a broader investigation into financial irregularities within the previous government.
Last November, Mauritius’ newly appointed Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam, initiated an audit of public finances, citing concerns over discrepancies in data compiled by the previous administration. This follows the recent detention and bail release of the country’s former central bank governor, who was charged with conspiracy to commit fraud.
Mauritius, an Indian Ocean archipelago, is known as an offshore financial hub, positioning itself as a key link between Africa and Asia. The case adds to growing scrutiny over the country’s financial practices.
