Heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on Djibo, the capital of Soum Province in Burkina Faso’s Sahel Region, early Tuesday morning, engaging security forces in a prolonged firefight. According to intelligence sources, the attack began around 6:30 a.m., with militants storming the city from multiple directions, triggering intense gunfire and explosions.
As of 9:30 a.m., the confrontation was still ongoing, and the extent of casualties and damages remained unclear. The attack underscores the worsening security crisis in Djibo, a strategic town that has been under siege by jihadist groups since 2022, leading to food shortages and humanitarian distress.
In a separate attack, another group of terrorists struck Gorgadji, a town in Séno Province, around 9:20 a.m. Though details on casualties are yet to be confirmed, Gorgadji has a history of violent insurgent attacks, including a 2021 massacre that left over 80 people dead.
Security forces have been deployed to both locations to repel the attackers and restore order. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the situation unfolds. The escalating wave of attacks highlights the deepening insurgency in Burkina Faso’s northern regions, where jihadist groups continue to challenge state authority and civilian safety.
