A devastating ultimatum from unidentified gunmen has forced residents of Dianké village in central Mali to flee their homes, leaving hundreds stranded in the bush without shelter, food, or assistance.
The gunmen, whose identity remains unclear, stormed the village, issuing a deadly warning to the residents to never return. Witnesses reported that the gunmen set fire to some houses, leaving the villagers with no option but to flee with only the clothes on their backs.
The displacement crisis in Dianké is the latest chapter in Mali’s deepening instability, which has seen escalating violence between the Malian military, Wagner-linked mercenaries, and insurgent groups. The Malian junta, which seized power in 2021, has struggled to contain the violence, leaving communities like Dianké vulnerable to attacks.
With no immediate rescue efforts underway, the displaced residents of Dianké are facing a desperate situation, with no shelter, food, or aid in sight.
The international community is urged to intervene and provide humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the affected communities.
