Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Channels Television have issued apologies to the Department of State Services (DSS) for their report on the incident at the Lagos State House of Assembly on February 17.
The report alleged that DSS operatives invaded the assembly, but it was later revealed that the DSS was invited by the acting clerk to maintain order due to a potential security risk.
The DSS had threatened legal action against AIT and Channels TV, demanding a retraction and public apology. AIT acknowledged that their report was incomplete and may have misrepresented the role of the DSS.
Seun Okinbaloye, host of Channels Television’s Politics Today, also apologized for the misleading report, stating that the use of the word “invasion” was incorrect. Okinbaloye thanked Nigeria’s security operatives for their efforts in protecting citizens.
The apologies from AIT and Channels TV highlight the importance of accurate reporting and the need for media organizations to take responsibility for their mistakes.
