President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Dual Carriageway (Section 1) and Section 1 of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Sagamu, Ogun State, Tinubu, represented by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun highlighted the strategic importance of the roads, describing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as Nigeria’s busiest highway and a critical link between Lagos and the 17 southern states.

The project, set for completion in 24 months, will include underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, as well as flyover bridges at Kilometer 16 near the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometer 37 at Makun, Sagamu. Pedestrian bridges will also be built at key locations, including Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption Camp. Additionally, the 60-kilometer Sagamu-Benin Expressway (Sagamu Interchange to Itele) will be reconstructed to enhance road safety.
“The federal government is committed to linking rural roads to urban centers and industrial corridors, aligning with our Renewed Hope Agenda to modernize national road networks, railways, and airports,” Tinubu stated. He emphasized that improved infrastructure would reduce travel time, enhance productivity, boost safety, and facilitate business operations nationwide.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, explained that this phase of the Lagos-Ibadan project includes key underpasses and extends to Sagamu and Iperu, covering 24 kilometers. He also announced plans for the next phase, which will extend 48 kilometers to Ijebu-Ode as part of the Sagamu-Ore road expansion.
Umahi stressed that contractor payments would only be made with a valid Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate and Performance Bond to ensure transparency and accountability.

Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Hon. Akin Alabi, reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting road infrastructure projects that benefit Nigerians. Ogun State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, expressed appreciation for the inclusion of pedestrian bridges and pledged collaboration to ensure timely project completion.
The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, urged the federal government to construct additional flyovers at Sagamu Junction and the police divisional junction, along with a fire station for emergency response.
Governor Abiodun officially flagged off the project on behalf of President Tinubu.
