International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) amidst escalating conflict in the eastern region.
The conflict has intensified in recent weeks, with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group seizing two major cities and displacing thousands of civilians.
Khan expressed concern over the situation, stating that the ICC will investigate alleged crimes committed in North Kivu province since January 2022.
He emphasized that all parties involved, including armed groups and government forces, must comply with international humanitarian law.
The ICC has previously investigated crimes in the DRC, convicting three individuals since its first investigation in 2002.
Khan’s visit comes as the ICC reopens its investigation into alleged crimes in the DRC, with a focus on North Kivu province.
Khan is set to meet with DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, government officials, and victims of the conflict to discuss the ongoing investigation and the importance of upholding international humanitarian law.
