Gunmen attacked a police escort team along the Azumini-Ndoki road in Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday evening, shooting a VIP and his driver before abducting them. Intelligence sources confirmed the incident to Zagazola Makama.

The VIP, identified as Chief Lawson, was being escorted by Sergeant Jude Gubi, ASP Tanko Natip, and Inspector Ernest after a trip to Arochukwu. Around 7:00 p.m. at Mkapjekere Ndoki, a dark blue Sienna filled with armed men blocked their convoy, which included a black Land Cruiser (Reg. No. KPR 627 TH) and a white Toyota Hilux (Reg. No. YAB 115 CE).

A gunfight ensued as the police attempted to repel the attackers. The gunmen demanded the VIP enter their vehicle, but when he refused, they shot him and his driver before taking them away. Security forces have launched a manhunt to rescue the victims and apprehend the assailants. Investigations are ongoing.
