Mabel Segun, a renowned Nigerian writer, educator, athlete, and diplomat, has passed away at the age of 95.
Her family announced her passing in a statement, expressing gratitude for her life dedicated to literature, broadcasting, and sports.
Segun was a trailblazer in many fields, studying English Literature, Latin, and History at the University College Ibadan.
She became a distinguished educator, serving as Head of English and Social Studies and Vice Principal at the National Technical Teachers’ College, Yaba.
As a writer, Segun’s works included “My Father’s Daughter,” “Olu and the Broken Statue,” and “Under the Mango Tree.” She was also a talented athlete, becoming Nigeria’s first female table tennis champion and competing until the age of 58.
Segun’s career in broadcasting and diplomacy was equally impressive, serving as Nigeria’s Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.
She was a lifelong advocate for women’s empowerment and education, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Segun is survived by her children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
