Ethiopia’s Tigray region is calling for federal intervention after a faction of the main regional party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), seized control of the northern town of Adigrat. This development has sparked fears of a return to conflict in the war-scarred region.
The TPLF, which runs Tigray’s interim administration, has split into two factions, each claiming control of the party.
Getachew Reda, who leads one faction and heads Tigray’s interim administration, accused his rival, Debretsion Gebremichael, of forcibly taking control of Adigrat’s administration.
Getachew has removed three senior army commanders from their positions, accusing them of trying to drag the region into internal conflict.
He urged the federal government to provide necessary support, warning that the people of Tigray are at risk of entering “a second round of destruction”.
The Ethiopian government has yet to respond to the situation, which has raised concerns about the stability of the region.
The Tigray region has been recovering from a devastating two-year war between Tigrayan forces and the federal government, which ended with a truce signed in November 2022.
