The Lagos State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has rejected the imposed leadership of Olatutu Oladunni-led executive, insisting on a fresh election as soon as possible in line with the resolution of the 2024 SWAN full council meeting which dissolved all executive bodies and ordered for a fresh election in Lagos SWAN Chapter.

In a letter to the National SWAN Executive, the Lagos SWAN stakeholders commended the current leadership for its efforts in addressing the challenges inherited from the previous administration under Honor Sirawoo, but expressed concerns that the reconciliation process in Lagos has not followed the precedent set in Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory.

Beyond the unconstitutional emergence of Olatutu’s leadership, the members asserted that leadership imposed without a legitimate election cannot enjoy the support of the majority.

Stakeholders questioned why Lagos SWAN’s case was being handled differently. Citing the legal principle of stare decisis which asserts that similar cases should be resolved in the same manner—they urged the national leadership to ensure consistency in decision-making.

Lagos SWAN said pending the implementation of the decision from the apex decision-making body of SWAN, status quo must be maintained. The members alleged that there are no clear plans for a credible election and insisted they would not participate in any electoral process unless the National SWAN takes full responsibility for the organisation of a fresh election.

While reaffirming their commitment to peace, they stressed the importance of due process to prevent further leadership crises within the association.
