President Bola Tinubu has officially written to the House of Representatives, seeking approval for the state of emergency he declared in Rivers State, citing Section 305 of the Constitution.
The House is set to debate the issue today, Wednesday, March 19, and will decide on further legislative action.
The state of emergency was declared due to the lingering political unrest between the Executive and the Legislature in Rivers, which has crippled governance and threatened peace and security in the state.
Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas has been appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers, while the judiciary will continue operations.
The National Assembly was consulted before the declaration, with the leadership meeting with the President and security chiefs ahead of the broadcast.
