Tragedy struck in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Wednesday as an explosion at Karu Bridge claimed six lives and left fourteen vehicles destroyed in a raging inferno.
The incident caused widespread panic among residents of the nation’s capital.
According to a statement by the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, the accident occurred when a trailer lost control and crashed into a stationary vehicle caught in traffic. The impact triggered a fire that quickly spread, engulfing multiple vehicles.
“Panic and chaos followed as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped,” Adeh said.
Despite their efforts, six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead. Their remains have been deposited at the Karu General Hospital morgue.

With the intervention of the police, fire service personnel, and security agencies, the fire was eventually contained, and normal traffic flow was restored.
The FCT Police Command expressed condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of the disaster and prevent future occurrences.
