A deadly ambush near the Somali border has claimed the lives of six Kenyan police personnel, with four others injured.
The attack occurred on Sunday at 05:30 local time, as the officers were preparing for their morning prayers.
According to Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo, the attack bears the hallmarks of Somali-based Islamist militant group al-Shabab, which has been responsible for numerous cross-border raids in the area.
The group, affiliated with al-Qaeda, has been waging a brutal insurgency against Somalia’s government for nearly two decades.
The police camp targeted in the assault housed reservists, local volunteers who assist regular police in securing remote areas. Al-Shabab’s “guerrilla-style” attacks aim to destabilize the region, and this incident is the latest in a series of violent incidents along the Kenya-Somalia border.
Kenyan authorities have been on high alert due to the threat of al-Shabab attacks, and the US Embassy had recently issued a warning to travelers about potential attacks in the region.
