A Kenyan police officer has gone missing after a gang ambush in Haiti, where Kenyan forces are part of an international security mission.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a patrol operation in Pont-Sondé, when the officer’s team was attacked by suspected gang members while helping a stuck Haitian police vehicle.
Specialized teams have been deployed to search for the missing officer, whose fate remains uncertain. Local media reports suggest the officer may have been killed, but this has not been confirmed.
This incident is not the first attack on Kenyan officers in Haiti. Last month, a 26-year-old police constable was fatally wounded during an operation, marking the first casualty among the Kenyan contingent.
Kenya has deployed at least 600 police officers to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, aimed at combating gangs that have seized control of large areas of the country.
The situation in Haiti remains dire, with over 5,500 people killed in gang-related violence in 2024 and more than a million displaced.
