A joint military operation in north-west Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of a notorious bandit kingpin, Gwaska Dankarami, and 100 of his suspected followers.
Dankarami, reportedly the second-in-command to an Islamic State-linked leader, had been hiding in the Munumu Forest.
Authorities claim this operation significantly disrupts criminal networks terrorizing communities across Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur.
The Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mua’zu, described the killing as a significant milestone in the fight against banditry.
Security forces also recovered and destroyed two machine guns and locally fabricated shotguns.
This operation follows a recent deadly attack on the village of Maigora, where bandits kidnapped 43 villagers and killed four others.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Dankarami’s death has been reported; the Nigerian Air Force claimed to have killed him in a similar operation in 2022.
The Katsina State governor has expressed determination to eliminate criminals and ensure thorough monitoring of forests to protect residents.
