Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, has expressed concern over the whereabouts of its leader, Tundu Lissu, after he was moved from a jail in Dar es Salaam where he was being held following his arrest on treason charges last week.
Despite attempts by party officials, lawyers, and family members to get access to him, his location remains unknown.
Lissu, who was runner-up in the 2020 presidential election, was charged with treason over a speech that prosecutors claim called for public rebellion and disruption of the election.
The charges against him may impact President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s human rights record as she seeks re-election later this year.
