A 77-year-old Nigerian immigrant and Uber driver, Olatunji Bolaji, was tragically shot and killed while picking up a passenger outside a hookah lounge in Philadelphia.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, when gunfire erupted outside the Byblos restaurant and hookah lounge.
According to police, a physical altercation between the passenger and two suspects escalated into a shooting, with one of the attackers firing four rounds that fatally struck Bolaji in the back of the head.
Despite being gravely wounded, Bolaji managed to drive a short distance before crashing into a light pole.
The passenger, who was also shot multiple times, remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Police are actively searching for the suspects and urge anyone with information or video evidence to come forward.
Uber released a statement mourning the loss, and the company has offered support to the police investigation.
Fellow rideshare drivers are grieving and calling for improved safety protocols, emphasizing the dangers faced by drivers working late hours.
