Mali’s military leader, Gen Assimi Goïta, has received support from key political allies to remain president for the next five years.

A national conference, boycotted by opposition parties, recommended naming Gen Goïta president until 2030.

Gen Goïta, 41, seized power twice and has pivoted Mali towards Russia, reducing ties with former colonial power France.

The conference also suggested suspending elections until peace is restored in the country, amid ongoing jihadist violence.

The military government has formed an alliance with neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Niger, and the three nations have withdrawn from the regional bloc Ecowas. Gen Goïta has yet to comment on the recommendation.
