Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has appointed veteran diplomat Dafallah Al-Haj Ali as acting prime minister, following the army’s recent recapture of key parts of Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Burhan—who also chairs Sudan’s transitional sovereign council—confirmed the appointment of ambassador Omar Seddik as the country’s new foreign minister.

The move comes weeks after Sudan’s armed forces pushed RSF fighters out of most of the capital, ending a prolonged military standoff that had divided the country into opposing zones of control. Despite the army’s advances in Khartoum, the RSF remains entrenched in the western regions of Sudan.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, stemmed from power struggles over the proposed integration of the RSF into the regular military. Both factions had previously cooperated in ousting Sudan’s civilian-led transitional government following the fall of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir.

In February, Burhan announced plans to amend the interim constitution, removing provisions on power-sharing with civilians and the RSF. The new structure would grant full authority to the military, including the power to appoint a technocratic prime minister, who in turn would form a cabinet.
