General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, has confirmed that he is holding Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard of opposition leader Bobi Wine, who had been missing for five days.

The general posted on social media that Mutwe was “in my basement” and threatened to use violence against him.

The admission has sparked widespread outrage, with Ugandans using the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe to demand Mutwe’s release.

Bobi Wine has called for a solidarity rally, accusing Gen Kainerugaba of “illegally holding, torturing, and dehumanizing” his bodyguard.

The Uganda Law Society has also condemned Mutwe’s detention, describing it as part of a systematic campaign to silence dissent and crush the aspirations of people yearning for freedom.

The incident has raised concerns about the targeting of opposition figures and supporters by security agencies ahead of the 2026 elections.
