Lydia Mugambe, a Ugandan High Court judge and United Nations judge, has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison in Britain for forcing a young woman to work without pay.
Mugambe was convicted of conspiring to bring the woman to Britain by lying on her visa application and forcing her to work as a maid without payment.
The judge showed no remorse for her actions, and the court heard that she had used her status in a “most egregious way” to exploit the victim.
The Crown Prosecution Service said Mugambe’s actions were a serious breach of the law, and she would have understood the implications of her actions given her role as a qualified lawyer.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals said it would take administrative actions to protect its integrity following Mugambe’s conviction.
