Gabon has sworn in Brice Oligui Nguema as its new president after a landslide victory in last month’s polls.
Oligui, a former junta leader, seized power in a coup that ended 55 years of dynastic rule by the Bongo family.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by 20 African heads of state, including leaders from Gambia, Senegal, Djibouti, and Equatorial Guinea.
Thousands of supporters packed the 40,000-capacity Angondje stadium in Libreville, where the ceremony took place.
Oligui faces significant challenges as president, including revamping crucial infrastructure, diversifying the economy, and addressing high youth unemployment and public debt.
During his transition period, Oligui portrayed himself as a “builder” and vowed to crack down on corruption.
The new president’s inauguration marks a new era for Gabon, and his government’s ability to address the country’s challenges will be closely watched by the international community.
