Ugandan opposition member Eddie Mutwe, a bodyguard for opposition leader Bobi Wine, was detained by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni, and showed signs of torture when presented in court.
Mutwe was seized by uniformed men near Kampala on April 27, and Kainerugaba later boasted on social media about capturing him “like a grasshopper” and using him “as a punching bag”.
Mutwe’s lawyer, Magellan Kazibwe, reported that his client was held in a basement, subjected to daily torture, and electrocuted.
The Uganda Human Rights Commission ordered Kainerugaba to release Mutwe, but he remains in custody on robbery charges.
Justice Minister Norbert Mao condemned Mutwe’s treatment, calling it an “abuse of judicial processes”. Mao emphasized that bringing tortured suspects before the courts undermines the justice system.
Kainerugaba’s actions have sparked concern, given his history of incendiary social media comments, including a post in January where he expressed a desire to behead Bobi Wine.
