Koyo Kouoh, a highly acclaimed curator and advocate for African creatives, has passed away at the age of 57.
Born in Cameroon in 1967, Kouoh grew up in Douala before moving to Switzerland at 13.
She studied business administration but chose a different path, working as a social worker and eventually becoming immersed in the art world.
Kouoh’s career was marked by numerous achievements, including overseeing acclaimed exhibitions and leading the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in Cape Town, South Africa.
She was set to become the first African woman to curate the Venice Biennale in 2026, a testament to her groundbreaking work in promoting African artists globally.
Kouoh’s legacy extends beyond her impressive career achievements, inspiring countless artists and art professionals with her warmth, generosity, and brilliance.
Her sudden death has left a void in the world of contemporary art, but her impact will be felt for years to come.
