The Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its promise to reward members of D’Tigress following their triumph at the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket.
The National Sports Commission announced on Monday that documents for the houses promised to the players were formally presented to members of the gold-winning team in Lyon.
The presentation was carried out by the commission’s chairman, Shehu Dikko, and its Director General, Bukola Olopade.
The reward package had earlier been approved by President Bola Tinubu on August 4, 2025, a day after the team successfully defended their continental title.

At the time, the president announced a cash reward of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for every member of the coaching and technical crew. He also approved a three-bedroom apartment for each team member at the Renewed Hope Estate and conferred on both players and officials the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Players who received the housing documents include Amy Okonkwo, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpannah, Elizabeth Balogun, Sarah Ogoke, Ifunanya Okoro, Promise Amukamara, Murjanatu Musa, Blessing Ejiofor, Ezinne Kalu, Victoria Macaulay and Nicole Enabosi.
Vera Ojenuwa, who was also part of the AfroBasket-winning squad, was absent at the ceremony and is expected to receive her package later.
Members of the backroom staff honoured alongside the players include head coach Rena Wakama and assistant coaches Wani Muganguzi and Prince Ezeala.
Speaking during the ceremony, team captain Okonkwo expressed appreciation to the government and Nigerians for their support, reaffirming the team’s commitment to making the country proud ahead of the forthcoming World Cup.
Wakama also commended sports authorities for their continued backing and expressed confidence in the team’s future.
The ceremony comes as Nigeria continue their campaign at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament in Lyon.
The African champions opened with a 70–37 win over Colombia, lost 77–60 to South Korea, bounced back with a 101–84 victory over the Philippines, and were later defeated 93–86 by France.
Nigeria will round off their campaign against Germany on Tuesday, using the matches as preparation for the World Cup finals after already securing qualification through their AfroBasket triumph.
