Nigeria’s U-20 national team advanced to the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025 after defeating defending champions, Senegal, 3-1 on penalties following a tense goalless draw after extra time on Monday Afternoon at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia.

In a fierce quarter-final clash between two West African heavyweights, both teams failed to find the net in 120 minutes of action despite several clear-cut chances. The result had to be decided from the spot, where Nigeria showed greater composure.
The Flying Eagles converted three of their penalties through Precious Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu, and Israel Ayuma. Meanwhile, Senegal crumbled under pressure, with Pierre Dorival’s shot saved, Mame Mor Faye denied by goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, and Ousmane Konaté smashing his attempt against the crossbar. Seydi Diouck scored the lone successful kick for the Teranga Cubs.

Nigeria’s win extends their perfect quarter-final record under the current format, making it eight straight appearances in the last four of the tournament.
Although the match ended without goals, it wasn’t short on drama. Kparobo Arierhi and Divine Oliseh tested Senegal’s goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, while Cheikh Thiam almost broke the deadlock for Senegal with a powerful header that hit the post in the 42nd minute.
In extra time, Nigeria pushed hard for a winner. Substitute Tahir Maigana forced a fine save with a curling strike, while Israel Ayuma’s long-range effort nearly broke the deadlock. However, Senegal held on to force penalties.

Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, largely untested during the game, stepped up heroically during the shootout — his crucial save from Faye tilting the contest in Nigeria’s favour.
Head coach Ladan Bosso praised his team’s mentality after the win. “We prepared for all scenarios, including penalties. I’m proud of the boys for executing under pressure,” he said.
Nigeria now move within two wins of an unprecedented eighth U-20 AFCON title, while Senegal, who had been unbeaten in knockout stages since 2017, exit the tournament with disappointment.
