The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, conducted an airstrike on Monday aimed at disrupting ISIS operations in the country.

The strike targeted ISIS militants approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Bosaso, in Somalia’s Bari region, located in Puntland State. The operation was launched in support of Puntland Security Forces as part of their ongoing campaign to eliminate the terrorist group from the area.

AFRICOM confirmed the mission is still underway, with assessments in progress to evaluate the impact on ISIS fighters and to determine the operation’s overall success.

Somalia’s federal government reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners, especially the United States, to combat terrorism and foster peace and security across the Horn of Africa.
