The Defence Headquarters has denied a viral video circulating on social media that claims to show footage of a recent terrorist attack on troops in Marte, Borno State.
According to Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, the video is unrelated to the May 12 incident and actually originated from a different incident that occurred in December 2020.
Kangye explained that an analysis of the video revealed that the terrain, visuals, and operational context do not match the recent Marte encounter.
He accused terrorist sympathizers and criminal elements of deliberately recycling the footage to mislead the public and undermine military morale.
The military confirmed that troops in Marte came under attack on May 12, 2025, at about 3 am but successfully repelled the terrorists after a fierce gun battle, neutralising a large number of them.
The Defence Headquarters condemned the spread of the false video, describing it as a malicious attempt to spread fear, discredit ongoing military operations, and erode public confidence in the Armed Forces.
The military has urged citizens to disregard the fake video and rely only on official channels for credible updates on military operations.
They vowed to identify and bring to justice those behind such disinformation campaigns, emphasizing their commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and making progress in the fight against terrorism.
