Gunmen on motorcycles have killed a lawyer and his client in the Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victims were ambushed while driving in a red Toyota Camry in Egbebelu village, Nanka, after attending a court session at High Court II in Ekwulobia.
The lawyer, identified as Barr Rolex Ifeanyi Iloakasia, a respected figure in local legal and political circles, had secured bail for a client in a pending murder case, which may have sparked the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen trailed and double-crossed the victims, opening fire on them without warning.
One victim died on the spot, while the other tried to flee but was chased down and killed. A third person survived the attack and is receiving medical treatment at a hospital, providing crucial information to aid ongoing investigations.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the attack, with Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu visiting the crime scene alongside senior officers.
Preliminary investigations suggest the victims were attacked while returning from court, and the police have deployed tactical and intelligence teams to track down the perpetrators.
The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and positively identified by their families, and a red Toyota Camry vehicle believed to belong to one of the victims was recovered from the scene.
The police have ordered an intensive investigation into the incident, aiming to ensure justice is served.
The motive behind the attack is suspected to be linked to the lawyer’s successful bail application, but further investigations are ongoing.
