The South-East Caucus of the 10th House of Representatives has called for the immediate resignation of Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), citing a “catastrophic institutional failure” in the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The lawmakers also demand the total cancellation of the examination and a new date fixed for the exercise across the country.
According to the caucus leader, Igariwey Iduma Enwo, the examination’s outcome was a “national shame” that has shaken the trust and confidence of students and families across Nigeria.
They expressed concern that all five South Eastern states were directly impacted by JAMB’s technical glitches, affecting nearly 380,000 candidates.
The lawmakers commended Oloyede for admitting the board’s failure but emphasized that apologies alone are insufficient to address the damage caused. “Leadership must carry consequences,” they said, urging Oloyede to resign to pave the way for a thorough examination and remediation of the root causes of the failure.
The 2025 UTME was marred by technical glitches, unusually low scores, and alleged irregularities in questions and answers, prompting JAMB to announce that about 379,997 candidates would retake the examination.
The South-East lawmakers insist that a mere apology is not enough and that concrete actions are needed to restore public confidence in the examination body.
