Professor Is-haq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has revealed that he considered resigning following a significant technical error that affected the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The UTME results, released on May 9, indicated that over 78% of candidates scored below 200 out of a possible 400 points. Subsequent investigations uncovered a technical fault that compromised the results of 379,997 candidates across 157 centers in Lagos and the South-East zones.
The issue stemmed from faulty server updates provided by one of JAMB’s technical service providers, leading to the failure to upload candidate responses during the first three days of the examination.
In response, JAMB organized a resit examination starting on May 16. During a meeting with chief external examiners, civil society organizations, and tertiary institution stakeholders in Abuja, Oloyede addressed the situation.
He acknowledged the public pressure and calls for his resignation, stating, “When it happened, my first reaction was to resign. But people advised me that the students would never forgive me because it would look like I abandoned them at such a time.”
Oloyede emphasized his commitment to rectifying the issues and ensuring the integrity of the examination process moving forward.
