Kenyans have expressed outrage over the detention of Rose Njeri, a software developer who created a tool to help people oppose the government’s annual finance bill due to fears it would raise the cost of living.
Njeri was detained after police raided her home in Nairobi and seized electronic devices.
Attempts to secure her release on bail have failed, with the Law Society of Kenya describing her detention as a “recurrence of dictatorship”.
Activists gathered outside the police station where Njeri is being held, demanding her release, while others expressed concern over her children.
The finance bill has been a contentious issue in Kenya, with mass protests last year forcing President William Ruto to withdraw the bill after at least 50 people were killed and dozens abducted in a security force crackdown.
