African football giants Al Ahly SC are gearing up for another shot at global glory as they prepare to compete in the expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

The Egyptian powerhouse—Africa’s most successful club—have been drawn into a tough Group A alongside MLS side Inter Miami, Brazilian champions Palmeiras, and Portuguese heavyweights FC Porto.

The other African teams in the FIFA Club World Cup are Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco

Despite the global spotlight on Inter Miami, led by football icons Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Sergio Busquets, Al Ahly remain confident. With a wealth of experience in high-stakes tournaments and a proven record at previous Club World Cups, the Cairo club believes it can rise to the occasion.

While Inter Miami may boast individual brilliance, their relative lack of cohesion and international tournament pedigree could play into Al Ahly’s hands. However, tougher tests may come from Palmeiras and FC Porto. Palmeiras are known for their aggressive, well-organised style—hallmarks of Brazilian football—while FC Porto bring European tactical discipline and speed to the group.

Al Ahly, now coached by Spaniard Jose Riveiro, recently appointed after a successful stint with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, will rely on a squad full of proven performers. Midfielder Emam Ashour, who has delivered 9 goals and 4 assists this season, is expected to be a key player. Slovenian striker Nejc Gradisar adds depth to the attack, while creative stars Afsha and Taher Mohamed provide consistent threat in the final third.

Having achieved multiple third-place finishes at previous editions of the Club World Cup, Al Ahly are determined to go even further this time. Their blend of tournament experience, tactical strength, and fighting spirit make them a team to watch and possibly, a dark horse for the title.
