President Bola Tinubu has directed the country’s service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to apprehend those responsible for the recent killings in Benue State, which have resulted in scores of deaths and injuries.
The President issued the order during a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi, the state capital, emphasizing the need for tangible intelligence to prevent future occurrences.
Tinubu also called for tolerance and dialogue among stakeholders in the North-Central state, urging them to work together to turn the tragedy into economic prosperity.
He proposed the establishment of a committee comprising past governors, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the lingering issues affecting Benue State.
The President’s visit to Benue State follows a recent attack on the Yelwata community, which left many dead and thousands displaced.
The Tor Tiv, James Ayatse, described the killings as a “calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land-grabbing campaign by herder-terrorists and bandits.” Governor Hyacinth Alia has also advocated for the establishment of state police and an intervention fund to restore peace in the state.
